Films

The Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future has produced these short documentary films as supporting material for lesson plans in FoodSpan (specifically, Lessons 1, 2, 6, 12 and 14). All three films look at potential solutions to seemingly intractable problems in the food system.

Growing Solutions

Growing Solutions (42 minutes) can be used in conjunction with Lesson 1: Crops and Lesson 6: Turning Toward Sustainability, and there is a discussion guide. The film discusses numerous innovations that protect and regenerate the natural resources needed to grow crops in a sustainable way.

Out to Pasture

Out to Pasture (34 minutes) can be used in conjunction with Lesson 2: Animals and Lesson 6: Turning Toward Sustainability, and there is a discussion guide. The film contrasts raising food animals on pasture with the prevailing industrial approach.

Food Frontiers

Food Frontiers (36 minutes) can be used in conjunction with Lesson 14: The Hunger Gap and Lesson 12: Why We Eat What We Eat, and there is a discussion guide. The film showcases six projects from around the United States that are increasing access to healthy food in historically underserved populations.
